I am Thijmen van Voorthuizen, PhD candidate and proud father of a beautiful daughter. I work at the Organic Chemistry department of Wageningen University & Research, as part of the OBSeRVeD project. My contribution to this project is the synthesis of Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs), a class of materials with high porosity and surface areas. This makes them ideal for applications involving gas interactions. They also enable material property control on the molecular level, thereby tuning the interactions with different gases. I will make these COFs into printable inks to coat our gas sensors, which should become more sensitive and selective because of the COF coating. Together with researchers within my department and the consortium, I hope to give poultry farmers a useful tool for disease control.
